2017 Blog

As the year draws to a speedy end, it is only fitting that I look back on the last 12 months and share my thoughts, before the festivities take over and the new year begins.

Do you ever get an idea and just run with it?

A year ago, I decided to start my blog.  I recall mentioning the idea to my then partner, who is now my husband.  I never had a clue how to set up a blog and what it would entail, but I knew it had to be interesting, authentic and inspiring.  So, I contacted my internet savvy cousin Simon and he sent me a few links.  Good old Google search gave me some suggestions and I got on with it

I was entering unknown territory, but this was one of my goals for 2017.  I wanted to use my experience to encourage and motivate women like me in higher education.  I had just been awarded my Doctorate and to be honest it was a surreal moment because….. How can I explain.  I had spent the last eight years from the moment I decided to do a PhD, through all the investigatory work I completed before submitting my proposal, undertaking the research and analysis, to receiving my confirmation email of my award.  I was a a black woman PhD candidate, employee and mother.  Being a PhD candidate was a big part of my identity.  Now it was over.  I was in the 9% of the completers category and part of the academic elite.  My thesis was complete and published in the Open University library and website for the world to read.  I also had a new title ‘Dr’, which I had felt awkward using, even now, I only use it in certain environments, but I’m getting used to it.  In a sense my blog helped me with my transition, because as I supported others, I was in fact helping myself.

I set myself a target of one post each week, which equates to 52 posts for the year.  This is my 54th post and my last for 2017.  So, although I have not posted every week, I have nonetheless exceeded my target.  I am feeling very proud of my achievement.  I was aiming to get 100 views and I remember discussing with my husband how I would raise the profile of my blog.  I even purchased 100 business cards to promote my blog and I still have over 50 cards left (which I will start distributing again).  But I guess word of mouth and my other social media platforms raised my profile.  I deliberately avoided looking at my blog’s statistics until now.  To be honest I was a little nervous because I wasn’t sure if I would achieve my goal.  But I am astonished, I have had 1087 views.  I give God thanks that I am in a position to share my ideas and thoughts and have the confidence and motivation to do so.

I would like to thank you all for taking the time to read my posts and send me messages of encouragement.  I wish you all the best for the holiday season.

Blessings and love.
